1.         Buy One or Two Aromatherapy Books Start your aromatherapy journey with one or two comprehensive books. These resources will provide basic information and help you identify areas of particular interest. 

2.         Join Aromatherapy Discussion Forums are invaluable for newcomers. You can read past discussions, ask questions, and learn from more experienced individuals. The Yahoo Group Aromatherapy for Everyone is a welcoming community for beginners, encompassing both novices and experts.

3.         Do Some Research on the Internet While having a few good books is great, the Internet also offers excellent resources. Be a discerning reader and consider the credibility of your sources. Manufacturer information, so seek out objective sites. AromaWeb is information-purpose website.

4.         Choose Five or Ten Essential Oils to start with just five or ten essential oils, as they can be quite expensive. Experiment with a few before investing in more if you decide to continue with aromatherapy.

5.         Buy 100% Pure, Unadulterated Essential Oils Purchase essential oils from reputable manufacturers to ensure they are pure and unadulterated. Avoid synthetic, fragrance, and perfume oils as they contain man-made chemicals and lack therapeutic value.

6.         Buy at Least One Carrier Oil For most topical applications, essential oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil. Good options include sweet almond oil, sunflower oil, and grapeseed oil. Choose cosmetic-grade oils and use only a few drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil.

7.         Store Your Oils Properly Store essential oils in dark glass containers with tightly closed lids to prevent evaporation. Keep them away from heat and light. Carrier oils can go rancid, so buy smaller quantities to ensure freshness.

8.         Learn How to Do a Patch Test Essential oils can cause allergic reactions or sensitization over time. Perform a patch test to check for adverse reactions "Remember to always perform a patch test before using a new essential oil on your skin.".

9.         DO NOT Use Aromatherapy with Children or Pets Until you are thoroughly familiar with essential oils and their safety issues, avoid using them on children, pets, or while pregnant or breastfeeding. Cats can be adversely affected by essential oils. Always keep them out of reach of children.

10.       DO NOT Ingest Essential Oils Despite conflicting information, avoid ingesting essential oils. Some oils safe for topical use can be toxic if taken internally and may interact with medications.
